Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900) wrote the music to the comic opera 'The Pirates of Penzance' in 1879, with lyrics by W.S.Gilbert. They collaborated on fourteen comic operas, with The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado among the best known. One of the most famous songs from The Pirates of Penzance is the 'Major-General's Song', known as a patter song; a rhyming tongue-twister . Sullivan wrote a vast amount of music, including 24 operas, 11 major orchestral works and 10 choral works and oratorios.
