Suite from ‘The Nutcracker’- Tchaikovsky arr. Vollam
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-93) wrote the fairy-tale ballet The Nutcracker in 1891-92. It is from an original story by E.T.A. Hoffmann The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Despite The Nutcracker becoming Tchaikovsky’s most popular ballet it is well documented that he “detested the score”. The suite here comprises of four movements, the Overture Miniature, Chocolate (Spanish Dance), the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy where the three tenor trombones use harmon mutes to imitate the newly introduced orchestral instrument, the celesta. Finally, Trepak (Russian Dance), based on a traditional Ukrainian folk dance known as the ‘Tropak’, completes this Nutcracker Suite arranged by Helen Vollam. Movements feature on our Enigma and ten CDs.
Scored for 3 tenor trombones (in tenor clef) and a bass trombone (bass clef). Score and parts provided.
